Here's a short article about how the US Army is using this method. Let your socks keep insulating your toes and add heat to the thinner skin and larger blood vessels. Use something warm (warm water bottle, heating pad, etc.) and place it around your calves/behind your knees rather than directly on your feet.Definitely don't mix the two unless you like exploding heart syndrome (ok, that may be a bit hyperbolic in most cases, but mixing uppers and downers is not great for your body). This may give you a momentary flush of warmth, but ultimately just facilitates the loss of heat. Vasodilators, like alcohol, increase blood flow all over your body, including your skin. I still take my adhd meds though, otherwise I end up on reddit in the middle of the day. Avoid vasoconstrictors and dilators! stimulants like caffeine and Adderall are vasoconstrictors that reduce the volume of blood that can flow at once.It does create a bit of a feedback loop though, as there is still blood going to your cold extremities before coming back into your heart and lungs, so keep your core temp up! If your core is cold, your body will shunt blood flow from your extremities until your important bits are warm enough. If you have longer socks, that helps too, but the most critical part is your core. Warm the whole system, particularly the core. The same goes for lacing your shoes too tightly. If you cram your thickest pair of wool socks into your regular shoes, you will restrict blood flow (which is what keeps you warm). Nice warm socks and insulated shoes/slippers/boots are great, but you have to keep them LOOSE.
